After a sluggish couple of years, Toyota is all set to stir up the Indian market by launching their new car Toyota Altis. The Toyota Altis will replace the current Toyota Corolla. It is planning to launch a barrage of six new models in the next few years. The new cars will be powered by a range of 1.1- and 1.3-litre engines. The products will include sedans and hatchback models. The former would compete with the likes of the Indigo CS and the Swift Dzire, while the hatchbacks will take on cars in the Swift price range.
The new product launches are expected to coincide with the start of commercial production at the second plant that is being built ad· jacent to the current plant in Bidadi near Bangalore. Production of these models is expected to start at the new plant by 2010.
The company will also launch the next-generation Toyota Corolla, renamed Toyota Corolla Altis, this September. It is expected to come in both petrol and diesel versions. Toyota’s SUV Fortuner is also expected to hit Indian shores, albeit only next year. The Toyota Altis will go head·to·head with Honda Civic.
