Toyota Corolla Altis with Diesel Engine in 2009

Let 2009 arrive and you will notice another sibling in Toyota Family, its latest offering, Toyota Corolla Altis in Diesel avtar. It will be powered by Toyota Yaris derived turbo diesel engine. Currently this diesel version will be offered in India only. It was only last month that all-new Toyota Altis Corolla was launched with only single engine option of 1.8L petrol which is carried over from its previous model whereas Toyota sells a new 2.0L engine in same car to its European clients.

India has a large market and desirous people who look for Diesel so it would have proved more beneficial and logical for Toyota to introduce this 2.0L sibling for Indian market too where diesel luxury saloons are gaining much popularity in recent times. But Totota has some technical issues doing so, its European Corolla has different engine mounting points on chasis which makes it a complicated process to implant a diesel powertrain to its Toyota Altis model in its current state. Totota has to make some serious changes to its engine bay to make it adaptable for Corolla’s diesel engine sold in Europe but it is not viable to do because Totota is not anticipating some large sales volume in this segment.

However, Toyota sources confirmed that they are looking for a smaller 1.4L turbo-diesel engine for its Indian sibling which powers Toyota Yaris hatchback as well. Toyota sources further hints that this new compact engine will deliver the engine power in 90-100 bhp range which will be more than enough for its current portfolio.

As such Toyota sources have not disclosed the exact launch date for this new diesel model but we expect it to hit Indian showrooms and roads anywhere in second quarter of 2009.
